Gertie Moss - In memoriam : Gertie Moss, my mother, died at about 2 a.m. on Thursday, November 3, 2005 (1 Chesvan, 5766) in Johannesburg, South Africa. It was a week before her 90th birthday.

The funeral took place on Friday November 4 at the Westpark Cemetery in Johannesburg. Lionel Karp delivered the following eulogy:

"Gertie was loved by all who knew her. She had a wide variety of interests. She was a loving wife to Willie in their 43 years of marriage. Gertie and Willie surrounded themselves not only with family but they also enjoyed an extensive circle of friends, and she was known for her quick wit. Gertie was a proud mother and mother in law of Clive and Hilda, Lionel and Beverley, grand mother to Lisa, Andy, Karen, Bradley, Shelly and Cliff and great grandmother of six apples of her eye. She managed to touch the lives of her grandchildren despite them being scattered across the globe. Even though none of her six great grandchildren live in South Africa, she has spent quality time with each of them in the past year, which we know filled her with much joy and nachas. Her flat was filled with pictures of all members of the family, and she cared deeply for each and every one of them.

"She had a quiet dignity that followed her around, and it was with this dignity firmly in place that she departed this world this was always her wish. There was a certain presence when she was in a room, and she had a way of making people feel comfortable around her. Gertie had a kind word for everyone. She had a passion for sport and always looked forward to the next game on television, which she would eagerly watch through all hours of the night. Her mind was alert, and she held strong opinions on how well or badly the South African Cricket or Rugby teams were doing. She had a wide variety of interests and was a very good tennis player and lawn bowler in her day. She also enjoyed gardening and spending time outdoors.

"She was especially well known for her culinary skills and her kichel and kneidlach are legendary. Having passed on her recipes to her daughter and grandchildren, they are an important part of her legacy.

"After Willie passed away, Gertie had the guts to go it alone and a fierce determination to be independent, going to all lengths to make devices to help her maintain her independence. If she is to be remembered for anything it was her passion for life, her determination and her deep ability to care for all those who loved her dearly. There was a kindness, simplicity, and goodness of character that marked all the years of her life and she will be missed by all those who knew her."

This gallery has been created to rekindle memories in those that knew her and create memories for those that did not know her. I will add to it as I scan and/or process more old and new pictures.

I have worked our a scanning workflow that lets me capture my old images faster than I can edit them. I upload them just just for kicks! Some of these (Lisa's wedding Pics) are not by me - I think Eric Diamond took them - apologies for copyright violation :-(
As editing proceeds, I will move them to the proper date/time and get rid of duplicates.
