The walk to the glacier started out over the river bed formed by the melt water from the glacier

  • We had a fine view of the mountains while eating breakfast at the hotel
  • We organized a group tour to the glacier - but no one else showed up, so we had a private guide
  • The walk to the glacier started out over the river bed formed by the melt water from the glacier
  • New Zealand glaciers are unique in that they terminate in a rain forest
  • Green and red mosses and lichens
  • We had to cross the fiver on wobbly rocks
  • Recent rains result in waterfalls
  • Several groups climbed the glacier - We opted not to. In Chicago I can walk on ice at no charge!
  • At this point, the river was hard to cross, so we had to take to what the guide called the "high track". The grey band on the rock face toward the lower right of the picture is where the water was at flood stage a few weeks ago
  • Up the high track
  • They mean it. Two tourists were killed the day before at the nearby Fox Glacier when several tons of ice fell on them
  • Waiting for the rain and icefall

  • The cove from which the glacial melt emerges from the ice face. The water is cold of course.
